Parisian Glow

Etching with aquatint. Image size: 12” high x 6” wide. Paper size: 15” high x 11” wide.

First place, Intaglio Etching, California Mid-State Fair fine arts exhibit, 2021.

A study in gorgeous low light. Inspired by Maddie’s 2019 trip to Paris. The luminescent tower floats in the evening sky over a pair of lovers on the Pont Alexandre III.

The dark values of the tower were laid in as superfine lines, while the bright cross beams were burnished up from the first light aquatint tone. The sky features a medium gradient aquatint. The aquatint of the rooftops, trees, bridge and statues is more coarse, enhancing the impression of obscured visibility. The lamp lenses are bare plate; after the plate is inked and wiped, David removes the plate tone ink before each print is pulled to allow the white paper to show through and provide the glow.
