Merced River, Yosemite Wilderness

Oil painting. 16” high x 20” wide.

Exhibited at Paso Robles Public Library, July and August 2023 (solo exhibit).

A study of water sheeting on granite. This scene is downstream (and the next morning) from David’s Merced River, Yosemite Backcountry. Here, the water spreads out over the red-stained granite, frothing white in the main flow. This spot is at the north end of Echo Valley below Merced Lake. Standing in the shade, David captured the warm morning sun on the trees and granite beyond. Wanting the feel of a fresh study, he painted this scene with thick, bright opaque brushstrokes that contrast with the washes of transparent purple that describe the water.
