A study in the soft build-up of drypoint values. A drypoint is an intaglio print, but it’s not an etching — there’s no acid involved. Every mark and tone on the plate is made entirely by hand with tools like hardened needles and roulettes. It’s a slow, painstaking process. Lines and tones are made and ink is rubbed into them, making them easier to see. Proof prints are pulled, showing progress. More lines and tones are added, and some areas are scraped and burnished to lighten or remove information. This is repeated until the artist is pleased, or not.

The print on display at the Fair is an Artist’s Proof. It represents the state of the plate at the time it was printed. Drypoints are variable. Their line quality and ink density is fleeting. This is because a small metal burr is created when a mark is drawn into the metal of the plate. The burr holds extra ink that when printed gives the lines and tones a unique quality not found in etched pieces. But the burrs are fragile and are soon worn down by the pressure of printing. In the case of this drypoint, the early lines have lost their burrs while the newer lines retain them. This was intended. Each state of this work will be slightly different, as more work is done on the plate.

Edition uncertain. David intends to do more work on the plate and run more tests using the Chine collé printing technique. Framed Artist Proof (AP) available. Please contact David to purchase or for more information. Prices do not include sales tax and shipping.
