Hawaiian Queen

Relief Print (2-color reduction linocut). Image size: 12” high x 9” wide.

Juried into Aloha Shirts, The Spirit and Story of Hawaii, July 2019, Studios on the Park, Paso Robles.

A study in joy. Inspired by playing cards, the art of Hawaiian shirts, and the song, My Hawaiian Queen by Sol Hoopii (the link opens YouTube in a separate widow/tab).

In a multicolor reduction print, the artist carves the matrix (in this case linoleum) in the image that they want to print in the lightest color (or the color that covers the most surface area). Then the artist carves the material from the matrix that will allow the lighter color to show when printing the darker color. It’s called “reduction” because the the matrix is "reduced" by carving away some of the material of the previous color.

Private collection. Commissions are available. Contact David for more information.

Copyright watermark is not part of print.
