Drypoint. Image size:  8” high x 6” wide. Paper size: 15” high x 11” wide.

A study in sassiness. A proof of David’s first drypoint (in its second state). In drypoint, there’s no acid etching — the image is incised by the artist directly into the plate with a hard-pointed tool (“needle”). The scratches can be soft and light, or firm and deep. The plate material that was in the groove of the scratch is still attached as a fine burr on one or both edges of the groove. When inked, the burr holds ink in addition to the lines. This gives the print a characteristic velvety blackness. But the burr only lasts so long through the pressure of printing, so drypoint editions are usually small, not more than 20.
