A study in entomology, sunlight and clear mountain water. On Sunrise Creek behind Half Dome, a mayfly hatches from a nymph to a subimago. Meanwhile a rainbow trout looks on in a slow driveby. Hey, it doesn’t always end in a meal! With over 1,200 lakes and 7 major river drainages in the Sierra Nevada National Parks, this small drama plays out millions of times each year. David was inspired by an encounter with a trout during a Yosemite backpacking trip from Happy Isles to Tuolumne Meadows.

Here’s a recent article about Mayflies from the Washington Post: “The World’s Oldest Winged Insect Is in Trouble. How Frightened Should We Be?” by Robert O’Harrow Jr. September 19, 2022. https://www.washingtonpost.com/magazine/2022/09/19/mayfly-decline/

This etching combines a number of different techniques including soft ground lines, coarse and fine aquatints, some scraping, lots of burnishing, and hard ground lines in the mayfly.
