Morning Fog, Atascadero

A soft, impressionistic portrait of the Atascadero Administration Building from the Sunken Gardens. David pre-mixed a preliminary palette of his colors in pastel tints before beginning the painting. To overcome the lack of linear perspective in the straight on view, David utilized atmospheric perspective by carefully mixing the subtle changes in value and hue to pull the fountain and foreground grass toward the viewer, and push the top of the rotunda away. Scumbled layers, broken color, built up forms, and soft brushstrokes and edges combine to create a serene of a formal facade.
