A study in trapped dynamism, and the first etching in what will be an alphabet of Sierra Nevada flora and fauna. This etching started as an experiment to see just how light and fine etched lines could be made, yet still print as lines. Originally it was just the dragonfly and mosquitos, but when David returned to this plate, he decided to add the script letter D. The letter has no hard outline; it was created with five separate etches of superfine lines to create the dark value. As a result, the letter has a soft edge of sorts. David wrapped the swash of the letter behind and in front of the dragonfly to give the elements the play of depth and transparency where the wings pass in front of the letter. Interestingly, when the eye follows the strokes of the letter around the image, it effectively freezes the dragonfly in place. But we know they rarely stay still!

A hard ground line etching, this image is made up of thousands of tiny lines etched for a short period of time.
